Mono Black Aggro

When it comes to Pauper my favourite deck is Mono Black Control though ,whether it is actually more Midrange I’m not entirely sure.

When Double Masters came out I immediately wanted to get the most out of Bone Picker but putting it into my regular decks wasn’t very successful as I tended to play it out on turn four as I had very few ways to cheat it out for B.

Bone Picker

This deck looks to change that to make a Bone Picker on turn 2 a realistic goal and to keep up the pressure, we add the synergy of spells and creatures to promote this strategy.

Creatures

  • 4 Serrated Scorpion
  • 4 Carrion Feeder
  • 4 Mortician Beetle
  • 4 Bone Picker
  • 2 Cavern Whisperer
  • 2 Gurmag Angler
Serrated Scorpion

Carrion Feeder and Mortician Beetle I feel work well in combination as with one sacrifice to Carrion Feeder, then the Mortician Beetle also grows as an alternate strategy. When a creature is sacrificed it allows for the Bone Picker to be cast for B.

Cavern Whisperer is something I wanted to try mutating on top of the current creatures though I have a concern about how practical it is with only twenty lands. It’s great fun and has provided several wins.

Gurmag Angler I feel with the cheap spells and sacrificial creatures can be cheated out early with Delve.

Changeling Outcast was originally in the deck and being unblockable is fun bur sometimes you need a blocker. Eventually I settled on Serrated Scorpion as the life swing and being able to Unearth pays dividends.

Spells

  • 4 Defile
  • 4 Innocent Blood
  • 4 Unearth
  • 4 Village Rites
  • 2 Cast Down
  • 2 Unexpected Fangs
Innocent Blood

I like the current spread of the removal spells, Innocent Blood I’m hoping will work well with Unearth to bring back creatures.

Villages Rites feels the more synergistic option to help trigger the Mortician Bettle off both sacrificed creatures and allow for Bone Picker synergy. I must confess though there are times I’ve wanted to Sign in Blood my opponent for the win.

Unexpected Fangs I feel helps my local meta as the Lifelink and building up a creature slightly can be enough to upset the combat math when racing with an opponent.

Lands

  • 2 Barren Moor
  • 14 Swamp
  • 2 Bojuka Bog
  • 2 Witch’s Cottage

We’re running a low land count as the deck is pretty much okay running off a couple of land, the additional land drops can be useful though to cast multiple spells in the mid game and later on have enough lands for the Gurmag Angler.

Sideboard

  • 4             Okiba-Gang Shinobi
  • 2             Snuff Out
  • 2             Disfigure
  • 2             Geth’s Verdict
  • 2             Suffocating Fumes
  • 3             Dash Hopes

I really not certain on how discard spells help so I’ve gone for OKkiba-Hang Shinobi though a fifty fifty split with Burglar rat may be better.

Snuff Out as additional removal as we can just pay the life cost to clear away a blocker as should have a swamp out.

Suffocating Fumes is a risk but if timed right our creatures should dodge it’s effect.

Dash Hopes is something I’m trying, usually the paying five life to stop the counter is frustrating but in this deck it would hasten our opponents demise.

Disfigure may be overkill on removal but is great for early removal filling up our graveyard.

Conclusion

The deck is really fun and a roller coaster of a ride.

There are times when Village Rites turns a game around to your advantage but in other games you can’t just use it.

This deck is fun to play.
