So I’ve always liked Ninja films from when I was a teenager, when Modern Horizons came out I wondered if their would now be a critical mass of Ninja’s to make a Pauper deck.
We’ve got the early game of one drop blue fliers as I like the way they can attack with evasion to allow unblocked creatures to fully exploit the Ninjitsu mechanic. You also get the potential to draw a card or scry again when they are replayed later. Smoke Shroud is saucy card as it can be cheated into play as when a Ninja enters via Ninjitsu it can attach itself from the graveyard inflicting greater damage immediately and allowing flying evasion the following turn. To aid the evasion we’ve added 2 Changeling Outcast as they still count as both a Ninja and a Faerie to push through the damage.
Initial testing has been fun and results inconsistent. Initially I tried to use Mob as removal but cheating it out early hardly seemed practical so felt a little too slow and sometimes a Diabolic Edict left in the graveyard feels underpowered compared to having a Chainer’s Edict despite being instant speed. After much tinkering with Ux counter spells I’ve had to admit defeat and rather than use cheaper recent printings I’ve turned up the mana base by adding Dimir Aqueduct so we can just play counter spells.
The deck can be offensively devastating if you can get out the Ninja’s to pressure opponents sufficiently, evasion seems to be the key to the deck being more successful.
There are some very good Dimir lists to play and as fun as it is, it is currently suboptimal and a work in progress despite utilising some stellar cards that are staples in other decks.
The only mission left with this deck is how to find a relevant turtle to the deck.
