Brewing With Commander Legends

So Commander Masters is upon us and we’ve got lots of new cards to look at.

I’ve already had a look at a Pirate Tribal deck and my deck idea can be found here.

That being said we’ve lots of others cards and potential mew decks to look at. These deck lists are more theory decks and starting points to inspire potential new archetypes in Pauper.

Green Counters

We had Lifecrafter’s Gift downshifted in Commander Legends, we have creatures that enter with counters or that can redistribute them for greater flexibility. As Pridemalkin also gives any creature with a counter on it trample I think this is a great combo.

Lifecrafter's Gift
  • 4             Skarrgan Pit-Skulk
  • 4             Arcbound Worker
  • 4             Young Wolf
  • 4             Arcbound Stinger
  • 4             Scounging Bandar
  • 2             Ivy Elemental
  • 2             Pridemalkin
Scrounging Bandar
  • 4             Hunger of the Howl Pack
  • 4             Elvish Rite
  • 4             Lifecrafter’s Gift
  • 2             Ram Through
  • 2             Hunters Edge
  • 20           Forest

Golgari Elves

Unlike traditions Elves are very much a go wide deck this version is designed to be more akin to a midrange Rock deck using the best creatures and spells available. Eyeblight Massacre is maximised by only using Elves and we go down the Monarch path with Entourage of Trest. I’d like this deck to succeed as a rock style midrange deck would be a great addition to the format.

  • 4             Nettle Sentinel
  • 4             Elves of Deep Shadow
  • 4             Fyndhorn Elves
  • 4             Elvish Vanguard
  • 4             Lys Alana Huntmaster
  • 2             Birchlore Rangers
  • 2             Entourage of Trest
  • 2             Priest of Titania
  • 2             Chainers Edict
  • 2             Cast Down
  • 4             Eyeblight Massacre
  • 4             Rancor
Eyeblight Massacre
  • 4             Ash Barrens
  • 4             Jungle Hollow
  • 12           Forest
  • 2             Swamp

Rakdos Midrange

Recently Rakdoe Midrange has started appearing as a consistent 5-0 deck im Pauper Leagues, this is my take on efficient creatures, removal and the Monarch for card draw. This is the deck I am most likely to physically build when my order arrives.

  • 4             Cuombajj Witches
  • 4             Phyrexian Rager
  • 3             Filigree Familiar
  • 1             Crypt Rats
  • 2             Crimson Fleet Commodore
  • 2             Thorn of the Black Rose
  • 2             Gurmag Angler
Crimson Fleet Commodore
  • 4             Nights Whisper
  • 2             Chainers Edict
  • 2             Terminate
  • 4             Fiery Cannonade
  • 4             Blightning
  • 4             Lightning Bolt
Fiery Cannonade
  • 4             Bloodfell Caves
  • 7             Mountain
  • 7             Swamp
  • 4             Ash Barrens

Cascade Ramp

Now this deck is probably the most fragile and with the current meta Tron just ramps better but maybe it will have a place should Tron get banned. The plan is to live long enough to cast a Cascade creature and live the dream of getting another massive threat for free. I’ve also got lots of disposable creatures to fill the graveyard so if needed Skaab Goliath can be played regularly.

  • 4             Fyndhorn Elves
  • 4             Elvish Visionary
  • 4             Filigree Familiar
  • 4             Pilgrim’s Eye
  • 2             Staunch Throneguard
  • 2             Skaab Goliath
  • 2             Annoyed Altisaur
  • 2             Fin-Clade Fugitives
  • 2             Maelstrom Colossus
Maelstrom Colossus
  • 4             Growth Spiral
  • 4             Frantic Inventory
  • 4             Fall from Favour
  • 4             Thornwood Falls
  • 4             Ash Barrens
  • 4             Island
  • 10           Forest

Champion Aggro

My final deck is actually FIVE variants of the same shell. I literally couldn’t decide wich was the best way to utilise Champion of the Flame. So I looked at what I wanted in any core build and then decided to round out the deck with flexible slots.

  • 4             Champion of the Flame
  • 4             Goblin Gaveleer
Champion of the Flame

The two most iconic cards for an Equipment based strategy.

  • 4             Lightning Bolt
  • 4             Galvanic Blast

I’ve gone for two solid removal spells with Artifact lands to generate metalcraft.

  • 4             Madcap Skills
  • 4             Golem-Skin Gauntlets
  • 4             Bonesplitter
  • 2             Sparring Collar
  • 2             Bonesaw

Madcap Skills and Golem-Skin Gauntlets look amazing with cheap equipment to buff up the creatures. I’ve then added Sparring Collar as First Strike and Trample is going to be useful and instant speed equipping may become relevant.

Mono Red

  • 4             Darksteel Axe
  • 4             Satyr Hoplite
  • 16           Mountain
  • 4             Great Furnace

Boros Heroic

  • 4             Ethereal Armour
  • 2             Benevolent Blessing
  • 2             Heliod’s Pilgrim

We get Benevolent Blessing and Ethereal Armour with Heliod’s Pilgim to search them out.

  • 4             Ash Barrens
  • 6             Mountain
  • 6             Plains
  • 2             Ancient Den
  • 2             Great Furnace

Boros Meltalcraft

  • 4             Ardent Recruit
  • 4             Aurioak Sunchaser

We’ve added extra creatures to maximise our advantage from the equipment. I did consider dropping the Goblin Gaveleer to fit in some further enchantments.

  • 4             Ancient Den
  • 4             Great Furnace
  • 6             Mountain
  • 6             Plains

Izzet Trinkets

  • 4             Aqueous Form
  • 4             Trinket Mage

I remember Blue White Historic in Standard so Aqueous form gets a run out. Trinket Mage is my tech to dig out the best Equipment.

  • 4             Ash Barrens
  • 6             Mountain
  • 6             Plains
  • 2             Great Furnace
  • 2             Seat of the Synod

Jeskai

  • 4             Ethereal Armour
  • 2             Benevolent Blessing
  • 1             Trinket Mage
  • 1             Heliod’s Pilgrim

This is the deck with the most unstable mana base but also feels like it has all the best cards and may yet be worth running.

  • 4             Thriving Bluff
  • 4             Ash Barrens
  • 7             Mountain
  • 1             Plains
  • 1             Island
  • 1             Great Furnace
  • 1             Seat of the Synod
  • 1             Ancient Den

Conclusion

I’ve enjoyed brewing with the new cards and will be looking to see how Commander Legends affects the format.

Would love to see your brews and if you like the look of a deck from here I’d love to see how you do with the deck and how the deck evolves into your finished version.
